REUGE - Do you feel nomad?

A concept that combines the expertise of an age-old manufacturer with the audacity and sensitivity of a renowned designer.

Press release

What is the object of your desires and what pleasures does it bring you? Introducing the new creation from REUGE - nomad. This irresistible object, that can be both symbolic and iconic, is the fruit of collaboration between REUGE and the talented designer, Xavier Perrenoud, and his team. nomad – when an object of art and design becomes an object of idolization.

Innovation as a philosophy since 1865

We all have personal objects, precious reminders of the experiences of our lives. Sometimes these objects evoke moments of nostalgia, serenity, or love. They echo our roots and the strength of our heritage. They are personal, they are priceless, and they comfort us no matter how much time passes by, and we continue to guard them preciously for the rest of our lives.

This link to precious objects of our childhood is what designer, Xavier Perrenoud, defines as his angle of reflection and creation. The music box has always been strongly linked with childhood sentiments, through its comforting, reassuringly sweet melodies that sway us in dream, giving us warmth and security, much akin to Marcel Proust’s description of the Madeleine and the respite offered by its emotional anchorage.

From talismans and amulets, to good-luck charms, nomad alludes to a fetish object. Created for the aesthete, the discerning client, the epicurean, or the art or music aficionado, the preciousness of the nomad is always with you.

Like the nomadic lifestyle that symbolizes the ease by which we travel today, through many miles and time zones to the rhythm of their days, in-between city, sea and mountain, nomad embodies the concept of the mobile music box. Whether in your office, or your New York penthouse, or nestled in your chalet in the heart of the alps, curled up in your Le Corbusier lounge chair, admiring a Rothko or a Herb Ritts portrait, nomad is the privileged witness to the moments of your life.

The project was initiated in collaboration with Xavier Perrenoud, founder of XJC Studio in La Chaux-de-Fonds, and his team. His aesthetic approach and bold stylized lines brings to his creations a world of contrasts of strength and softness. True to its cosmopolitan image and avant-garde qualities, nomad will be available from December 1st, and sold initially exclusively on www.reuge.com. The inaugural collection on the website will offer clients a nomad made-to-measure, with 4 variations of noble woods and shades, in a limitless number of variations, and according to the wish of each client.

The 2011-2012 nomad collection will be available in 2 versions : one with a musical movement of 36 notes and 1 melody, the second, with a musical movement of 72 notes and 3 melodies, with suggested retail prices ranging from CHF 990 to CHF 1,590. The nomad is bedecked in a richly sculpted case made of Hemlock, which radiates russet hues and a natural release of subtle fragrances.

Its winding mechanical musical movement stores up enough power for a reserve equivalent of 4 musical cycles. And, a start/stop button located under the case allows for music to be played or paused on demand.

With a heritage spanning almost a century and a half, REUGE is about to extend its legacy. With the launch of nomad and the simultaneous introduction of the iReuge, the company is looking to the future by asserting its direction towards the contemporary.

Kurt Kupper, CEO of REUGE, explains :

« We are very pleased to be working with Xavier Perrenoud, who has quite perfectly reinvented and transposed the essence of the modern music box. While travelling around the world to meet our partners, clients, and journalists, for weeks and sometimes months at a time, nomad represents to me an object that allows me to maintain a link to my private world and with my family. Like a watch that displays dual time zones, with one connecting me to the time back home, the nomad keeps me connected to the place where my heart and cherished ones reside. It therefore embodies an object adapted to a life in motion. »

Xavier Perrenoud, founder of XJC studio of design in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and Associate Professor of the Master of Advanced Studies in Luxury at ECAL (Ecole cantonal d’art de Lausanne), shares some of his provoking thoughts which led him to design the product :

« As a designer, the object occupies a special place in my life. It is the materialization of my ideas and concepts, the fruit of my imagination. If I think back to my childhood and the precious objects I possessed, they were like beacons to me. All of us have an inner-child, a part of us who continues to believe anything is possible. In-between Utopia and innocence, we create our world according to our dreams. I have always admired the know-how of REUGE, from the magic of the music it créâtes to the secrets of its movements. In wondering about the meaning of the music box and what place it might occupy in our cosmopolitan lives today, I wanted to create a concept that allowed me to translate my childhood dreams into an object permeated by symbolism. »
