Inhabitant

In Geneva, from the first influx of refugees until the end of the Ancien RÈgime, the term had a precise legal definition. A careful distinction had already been drawn in the Franchises of 1387 and texts of the 15th century between inhabitants and burghers. The latter alone could exercise the political and legal rights afforded to them under the Franchises.
