Balance cock (traditional)

Balance cocks were originally (in the 16th century) simple and very elongated, secured at their centre by a key. In the 18th century, they were elaborately engraved and often spanned the entire watch movement. The decorative motifs varied widely: animals, flowers, leaves, human heads etc. There were two main forms of balance cock.
