Watches sometimes contain a wide variety of additional components. These different complications can be divided into three groups:
- Watches with one or more additional hands to tell the time;
- Watches with striking mechanisms;
- Watches with astronomical indications (calendar).
These three groups are often found together in the same watch, thereby resulting in a large complication.
Each group can in turn be divided into categories.
For watches with one or more additional hands:
1) Watches with independent centre seconds;
2) Watches with jumping seconds;
3) Counter-chronographs;
4) Split-second chronograph.
For watches with striking mechanisms:
1) Quarter repeaters;
2) Five-minute repeaters;
3) Half-quarter repeaters;
4) Minute repeaters;
5) Full strike.
For watches giving astronomical indications:
1) Simple calendars;
2) Perpetual calendars;
3) Moon phases;
